Oct 28: Popeye’s Fried Chicken; “Grazing” Meal

Lunch

As we were without power again, and living off our batteries, we planned take out for lunch and a no-cook dinner. Lunch was from Popeye’s.

  • The Chicken works out to $1.58 per piece, or $3.16 per serve
  • The Red Beans and Rice were $2.18 per serve.

An enjoyable lunch for $5.34 per serve.

Dinner

Since we had limited power we decided on a no-cook meal of Brie, Sugar Snap Peas, Hummus, Corn Chips, Almonds and Grapes.

  • Tortilla Chips were $2.99 or 50c a serve
  • Seedless Grapes were $4.99 or 40c per serve
  • Sugar Snap Peas were $3.49 and we used half, or 88c per serve
  • Hummus was $3.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • Almonds with Rosemary were $5.99 or 80c per serve
  • The French Brie was perfectly ripe for $6.20 or $1.55 per serve.

A great way to enjoy a variety of flavors for $6.13 per serve.

Oct 27: Potato & Peppers Frittata; Sous Vide Pork Sirloin with Peppers and Sprouts

Lunch

In a short break while we had power, we cooked up half a pack of Trader Joe’s Roasted Potatoes with Peppers and Onions, and topped with beaten eggs and cooked as a Frittata.

  • The Roasted Potatoes with Peppers and Onions is $2.99 for the pack, but we used half, or 75c per serve
  • Pastured Eggs are 51c each or $1.02 per serve.

We ate two quarters each, it was that good, for $1.77 per serve.

Dinner

We Sous Vidé a Pork Sirloin to a perfect medium rare and served with Stir-fried Bell Peppers and Bean Sprouts.

  • The Pork Sirloin was about $10.00 and we served about 2/3 putting aside the rest for a sandwich or roll later, or $3.33 per serve
  • Mung Bean Sprouts were $1.59 or 80c per serve
  • Red Bell Pepper was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve.

The Pork Sirloin was perfectly tender and the Bean and Peppers Stir-fry was a good accompaniment for $5.13 per serve.

Oct 26: Pork Enchiladas; Hot and Sour Beef Salad

Lunch

We picked up some very good Pork Enchiladas from Viva La Fiesta nearby for $14.82 per serve for a full meal with Enchiladas, Beans and Rice.

Dinner

The Hot and Sour Beef Salad has the advantage of being grilled and not using any electricity! We grilled the Rib Eye on the outside grill before marinating and serving on a very simple salad base.

  • The 10 oz Dry Aged Rib Eye is $8.10 per serve
  • The Salad Greens mix was $3.29 but we shared half, or 83c per serve
  • Limes were 66c for two but we shared one, or 16c per serve
  • Instead of a Chili we used some Sambal Ulec, which adds 20c per serve.

We really enjoyed this salad. The slight heat in the dressing lifted both steak and salad to another level. An excellent meal for $9.29 per serve.

Oct 25: The Country Deli; Greek Salad

Lunch

Still without power due to the PSPS we went to The Country Deli for lunch where Foodie Philip had the Marinated Skirt Steak, Eggs and Home Fries, while Foodie Greg had the Pastrami on Rye with Steak Fries.

Lunch at The Country Deli cost $23.64 with tax and tip.

Dinner

We put together a simple Greek style salad (with Cheddar instead of Feta) for about $2.17 per serve.

Oct 24: Chicken Salad Sandwich; Lamb Kebab with Grilled Vegetables and Afghan Rice

Lunch

Due to a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) the Foodies were without power today. For lunch we decided on Curried Chicken Salad Sandwiches.

  • The Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • The Curry Chicken Salad is $4.49 and we each had ⅓, or $1.50 per serve.

Not a bad sandwich for $2.16 per serve.

Dinner

Since the power was still out when planning dinner, we went to Skewers Halal and picked up their excellent Lamb Kebab (skewer) and Grilled Vegetable with Afghani Rice for $16.32 per serve.

Oct 22: French Dip; Scrambled Eggs on Toast

Lunch

A break in the weather meant we could go out for lunch, so we both had a French Dip at the Kickapoo Tavern in Keystone.

The Gruyere was a little non traditional, but the fries were great, the French Dip itself had good bread and meat, and the Dip was flavorsome with a hint of Thyme. Overall a good meal for $25.52 per serve.

Dinner

Dinner was somewhat disorganized, and snowed in again, so we did Scrambled Eggs on Toast.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 33c per slice
  • Pastured Eggs are 51c each, or $1.02 per serve.

A serviceable meal for $1.32 per serve.

Oct 21: Ham, Swiss & Tomato; Frozen Swedish Meatballs

Lunch

Still snowed in we relied on what we had at hand and made Ham, Swiss & Tomato sandwiches.

  • Dave’s Killer abroad is 66c per serve
  • The Tomato adds 35c per serve
  • Swiss slices are 12 for $3.99 or 16c per serve
  • Ham adds 75c per serve.

A pretty good sandwich for $1.92 per serve.

Dinner

Still snowed in we had our alternate frozen meal: Marie Callander’s Swedish Meatballs, which were decent for $4.49 per serve.

Oct 20: Bacon & Eggs on Toast; Beef Teriyaki Bowls

Lunch

A Sunday lunch often includes eggs, so we did Fried Eggs & Bacon with Toast.

  • Eggs are 51c each or $1.02 per serve
  • Two slices of bacon are $1.37 per serve
  • A slice of Dave’s Killer Bread is 33c.

A pretty good lunch for $2.72 per serve.

Dinner

Since we knew we would be snowed in tonight, as we were, we had frozen Beef Teriyaki Bowls for $4.49 per serve. These weren’t particularly good.
