May 18: Shin Bowl; Egg Drop Soup

Lunch

A slightly cooler day made Shin Noodle Bowls an attractive proposition. A pack of four was $3.69 or 93c per serve, which proved to be quite generous and a satisfying – if spicy hot – meal.

Dinner

Being Meatless Monday we were going to do a noodle dish, but having noodles for lunch, we changed to Egg Drop Soup.

Egg Drop Soup is an easy Meatless Monday meal, although new to the Foodies.

  • Two Large Eggs are 21c per serve
  • Chicken Bone Broth is $1.00 per serve
  • The Mushrooms were $1.99, but shared about half, or $1.00 per serve
  • Add 30c for other ingredients.

This was simple and surprisingly good for $2.51 per serve.

May 17: Ham, Camembert & Chives; Duck Breast with Garlic Bok Choy and Yakisoba Noodles

Lunch

A long time ago, in a Country far away, we used to enjoy a Ham, Camembert and Chives on Walnut Bread from The Junction Gourmet Kitchen (Newcastle). Since we had Ham and Camembert we decided to give it a go.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • Camembert was $1.71 and we finished half, or 24c per serve
  • We shared a serve of ham for 14c per sandwich
  • Chives were $2.49 and we used ¼, or 31c per serve.

Toasting the sandwich softened the Camembert and released a lot more flavor than we experience last Monday. While not quite as good as the original, this was an enjoyable sandwich for $1.44 per serve.

Dinner

Now that we have perfected the Duck Breast, and there is a moderately reliable supply at Whole Foods, we have made it a “monthly” experience, as the price is comparable to our other premium proteins.

  • The Duck was $13.75 or $6.88 per serve
  • The noodles are $3.19 for the pack, or $1.60 per serve
  • The Bok Choy was $1.73 or 87c per serve.

As always, the Duck is perfectly cooked, and the sides a great balance. An excellent meal for $9.35 per serve.

May 16: Bahn Mi; Ham “Cobb Salad”

Lunch

As much as we don’t want to be out of the house, we also want to support local restaurants so they stay in business. Today we picked up a Bahn Mi from Pho Saigon 1, for $10.00 with tax and tip.

Dinner

We still have Ham, so we used it as the center piece of a Cobb Style Salad.

  • We shared a serve of ham for 14c per serve
  • The Burrata was $4.99 or $2.50 per serve
  • Large Eggs are 21c per serve
  • Organic Spinach was $1.99 and we used about ¼ or 25c per serve
  • Avocados were 31c or 16c per serve
  • The Grape tomatoes cost $1.79 or 45c per serve
  • Add 40c for Olive Oil and Balsamic Glaze.

An excellent Salad for $4.11 per serve/

May 15: Egg-in-the-hole Bagel; Coconut Curry Mussels

Lunch

After our recent experiment with reproducing an Egg-in-the-hole as a Bagel, we tried again, toasting the bagel first, which worked better.

  • The Brioche Bagels are $2.89 for five, or 58c per serve
  • Large Eggs are 21c each, or an average of 42c per serve
  • We shared a 31c Avocado, or 16c per serve.

The combination worked well, but we decided the Bagel needed to be toasted first. Not bad for $1.16 per serve.

Dinner

Being ‘Fishy Friday’ we returned to the Coconut Curry Mussels we enjoyed so much last time. We served with a hot Panini Roll.

  • The pre-cooked Mussels were $2.29 or $1.15 per serve
  • Coconut Milk was $1.89 or 95c per serve
  • We used three baby Bell Pepper for 16c each, or 24c per serve
  • Ginger was 24c, or 12c per serve
  • Add 75c per serve for the other ingredients
  • The Panini Roll is 63c.

This time we upped the Lime Juice and Fish Sauce for a better result. A very enjoyable dish for $3.84 per serve.

May 14: Creamy Ham & Mushroom Orzo; Rib Eye with Steak Fries and Garden Salad

Lunch

For lunch we finished the Creamy Ham & Mushroom Orzo from two nights ago for $1.41 per serve. It sure tastes like more than $1.41 per serve!

Dinner

Thursday night Steak night tonight was a Rib Eye seared in a hot pan, with oven-baked Steak Fries and a Garden Salad.

  • The Rib Eye from our Keller Crafted meat box is around $8.41 per serve
  • The Steak Fries were $1.65 and we used about half, or 42c per serve
  • Spinach adds 35c per serve
  • The cherry tomatoes were $2.99 and we used 1/4 or 38c per serve
  • Add 15c for dressing ingredients.

The Steak was flavorsome and cooked perfectly. The Fries were a little disappointing, ending up more baked than fried. All in all, a decent meal for $9.71 per serve.

May 13: Supermarket Sushi; Beer Bratwurst with Apple Bacon Slaw

Lunch

Since Foodie Greg was shopping at Whole Foods he picked up a box of Avocado Roll and one of Albacore Tune Sashimi for $10.74 per serve.

Dinner

Our changed shopping patten puts us more at Aldi than Trader Joe’s so it was time to try the Aldi Bratwurst along with an Apple Bacon Slaw.

  • Beer Bratwurst were $4.49 or $2.25 per serve
  • Bacon was $4.99 and we used four of 10 slices, or 50c per serve
  • The Nappa Cabbage was $3.57, but we used about ⅛ or 22c per serve
  • The Envy apple was $1.38 or 35c per serve
  • Add 20c for apple cider vinegar and seasoning.

The Aldi Bratwurst were different from, but definitely as good as the Trader Joe’s version. This was a pretty good meal for $3.52 per serve.

May 12: Ham, Swiss & Kumato, Sweet & Spicy Tuna & Swiss; Creamy Ham Mushroom Orzo

Lunch

A cooler day made some toasted sandwiches an attractive proposition, so we toasted our Ham, Swiss & Kumato along with a Sweet & Spicy Tuna, Capers & Swiss.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • A slice of Swiss is 34c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we shared one, or 35c per serve
  • The Tuna Pouch is 99c or 50c per serve
  • Add 70c for Capers and Garlic Spread.

Two very tasty sandwiches for $2.63 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight’s dinner is a new recipe for us: One Pot Creamy Ham Mushroom Orzo. We used a Chick Pea and Red Lentil Risoni instead of a wheat pasta. The recipe makes four portions.

  • The Baby Bella Mushrooms were $1.99 or 50c per serve
  • The Risoni was $2.99 or 38c per serve
  • Ham is 27c per serve
  • 2oz of Neufchatel is 25c or 7c per serve
  • Frozen peas are $1.29 per pack and we used half a cup, or 9c per serve
  • Add 10c for Onion and seasoning.

This turned out really well, with a lot of umami flavor, particularly since the Mushrooms were cooked down until they caramelized. The peas were a welcome textural variation not in the original recipe. Overall, a tasty meal for $1.41 per serve.

May 11: Shin Bowl; Vegetarian “Grazing”

Lunch

A cooler turn in the weather made a return to the Shin Noodle Bowls from an attractive proposition. A pack of four was $3.69 or 93c per serve, which proved to be quite generous and a satisfying – if spicy hot – meal.

Dinner

Tonight we did a “grazing” meal with the slight twist that there were no meat productions, it being Meatless Monday.

  • Foodie Greg picked up a $1.97 Camembert from Aldi, and we had about half, or 50c per serve
  • We used about ½ of the $5.75 Caramelized Onion Cheddar, or $1.44 per serve
  • Add 30c for Grapes
  • Add 25c for some very unsatisfying Sugar Snap Peas
  • Neufchatel is 99c a pack and we shared about ⅓, or 17c per serve
  • Almonds cost $5.99, but we only used about 1/8th the pack, or 38c per serve
  • Add 15c for Pickled Onions
  • Baby Bell Peppers add 30c per serve.

A very diverse and satisfying meal for about $3.49 per serve.

May 10: Egg-in-the-hole Bagel; Sous Vide Ham with German Style Potato Salad

Lunch

An experiment with reproducing an Egg-in-the-hole as a Bagel, because Bagels already have holes!

  • The Brioche Bagels are $2.89 for five, or 58c per serve
  • Large Eggs are 21c each, or an average of 42c per serve.

The combination worked well, but we decided the Bagel needed to be toasted first. Not bad for $1.00 per serve.

Dinner

We had an additional Ham from Aldi when it was on special before Easter, that we sous vide instead of baking as that’s been so good in the past.

Served with an excellent German Style Potato Salad. Unfortunately, no image because there was no card in the camera!

  • The 10 lb Ham was only $4.99 net, which is about 27c per serve
  • The Potato were $2.69 and we used about ½ or 68c per serve
  • Bacon was $4.99 and we used three of 10 slices, or 75c per serve
  • Onion and Seasoning add 45c per serve.

The Ham was excellent and the Potato Salad surprisingly good. An excellent meal for $2.15 per serve.

May 9: Caramelized Lamb Roll; BBQ Chicken Leg with Vietnamese Salad

Lunch

We took the remaining Caramelized Lamb, reheated it while finishing cooking two Panini Rolls and served with Kumato and Garlic Spread.

  • The Lamb is $2.75 per serve
  • A Panini Roll is 63c
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we had one each, or 70c per serve
  • Add 50c for Garlic Spread.

A very tasty roll for $4.58 per serve.

A simple meal where we steamed the remaining Chicken Legs and served with Vietnamese Salad.

  • The Chicken Leg is $1.75 per serve
  • Savoy Cabbage was $1.63 and we used about half, or 41c per serve
  • Carrots were $1.50 and we used half, or 36c per serve
  • Add 15c for seasoning.

A tasty and quick meal for $2.67 per serve.
