Dec 30: Fried Scallops, Fries & Coleslaw; Mussels in Red Curry Broth with Garlic Naan

Our “once every three weeks” expedition to Simi Valley finishes with Fried Scallops from Mr Fish & Chips. This is a meal for one that we shared -adding extra Coleslaw – making it $5.19 with tax and tip.

A return to our proven Red Curry Mussels after exploring a Mustard and Cream version we didn’t like as much.

  • The pre-cooked Mussels were $2.29 or $1.15 per serve
  • Coconut Milk was $1.89 or 95c per serve
  • We used three baby Bell Pepper for 16c each, or 24c per serve
  • Ginger was 24c, or 12c per serve
  • Add 75c per serve for the other ingredients
  • The Garlic Naan is $3.99 for four, or $1.00 per serve.

A very enjoyable dish for $4.21 per serve.

Dec 29: Afghani Pita Pockets; Turmeric Coconut Curry with Pork and Brown Rice

We picked up Pita Pockets from Skewers Halaal and, as is their habit, Foodie Greg had Falafel while Foodie Philip had the Chapli. Two great meals for $10.30 per serve with tax and tip.

For dinner we finished the Turmeric Coconut Curry with Pork and Brown Rice for $3.42 per serve.

Dec 28: Potato Soup; Paneer in Butter Marsala Sauce with Garlic Naan

A cold day is a soup day and today’s was a Harvest Potato Soup from Aldi for $1.00 per serve.

Our Meatless Monday was an attempt at Paneer in a Butter Marsala Sauce.

  • The Garlic Naan is $3.99 for four, or $1.00 per serve
  • The Paneer was $6.49 and we foolishly included it all for $3.25 per serve
  • The Butter Marsala Sauce was $4.00 on special, or $2.00 per serve.

This was not our favorite meal. We put in way too much Paneer, which took the whole dish out of balance. Even so, the Butter Marsala Sauce felt like it was trying too hard to have flavor, that it went into unpleasant territory. A pity since it was quite expensive at $6.25 per serve.

Dec 26: Grazing Redux; Barramundi and Caesar Salad

For lunch we continued to nosh on the remaining cheeses etc for about $8.00 per serve.

  • The Barramundi was on special for $7.99 or $4.00 per serve
  • The Caesar Salad kit was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve.

A very good, but simple, meal for $5.00 per serve.

Dec 25: Red Wine & Mushroom Meatloaf, Christmas Gnocchi & Roast Garlic Alfredo Sauce; “Grazing” Dinner

For Christmas lunch we heated the remaining Red Wine & Mushroom Meatloaf and served with some festive star and Christmas Tree shaped Gnocchi in a prepared Roast Garlic Alfred Sauce.

  • The Meatloaf is $4.63 per serve
  • The Christmas Gnocchi was $3.99 or $2.00 per serve
  • The Alfredo Sauce was $2.99 or $1.50 per serve.

The Alfredo Sauce from Aldi was disappointing, but the Gnocchi was great. A good Christmas lunch for $8.13 per serve.

We chose a “grazing” meal of Leicestershire Red, Duck Mousse Pate, a rich creamy Brie-like cheese, Olives, Almonds, Blackberries and a Pate de Champagne. Along with Port and Stilton for “desert” this meal cost about $15.00 per serve.

Dec 24: Pablano Corn Chowder; Sous Vide Ham with Choucroute

For lunch we had prepared Pablano Corn Chowder, which was very tasty for $1.99 per serve.

  • The Sauerkraut was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve

  • Semi-dried Tomatoes add 64c per serve

A decent sandwich for $2.46 per serve.

A very tasty sandwich for $3.34 per serve.
