Jun 28: Duck on Bok Choy; Creole Style Jambalaya

Lunch

For lunch we heated some of the remaining Bok Choy and all the remaining BBQ Duck and shared that for lunch for $5.63 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we finally finished the last serve of the Creole Style Jambalaya, which has already been accounted for in the first four serves. Add $2.50 for tonight’s Argentinian Shrimp.

Jun 27: Filet American; Chinese BBQ

Lunch

Before our first trip to Amsterdam, a friend suggested that we’d like Filet American, which is a creamy variation on a Steak Tartar: raw beef with spices.

Since that friend was staying today, we prepared enough Filet American for six serves.

  • 2.25 lb of Top Sirloin was $22.58, or $3.76 per serve
  • Mayonnaise was $3.29 and we used about half, or 28c per serve
  • Add 30c for shallot, capers and seasonings
  • We shared a $3.99 baguette over lunch, or $1.34 per serve.

Our friend was correct. We love Filet American and this was a very good version of it for $5.68 per serve. (Pictured)

Dinner

After dropping our friend at the airport we headed for Sam Woo BBQ for some BBQ Duck and Char Su Pork. We will get four meals from this purchase at around $11.25 per serve.

Jun 25: Kumato & Cheddar; Corned Beef, Tabouleh and Béarnaise Sauce; Caramelized Beef Bowls on Sprouts

Lunch

We’re still enjoying the Kumato and Cheddar sandwich and today paired it with a Corned Beef, Tabouleh and Béarnaise Sauce (because we had the sauce from steak night).

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • The Old Crock cheddar was $5.45 or 68c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we shared one, or 35c per serve
  • Pastrami was $4.99 for 6 oz but shared ¼ or 63c per serve
  • Tabouli was $2.69 and we used about ½ or 67c per serve
  • The Béarnaise sauce was $3.29 and we used about ⅓, or 55c per serve.

Two good sandwiches for $3.51 per serve.

Dinner

Our meat box always contains ground beef and it can be challenging to find interesting ways of using it. Applying the Vietnamese Caramelized Pork recipe to beef, and serving on top of Mung Beens was tonight’s solution to that conundrum.

  • 1 lb of Keller Crafted ground beef is $8.25 or $2.06 per serve
  • Add 35c for shallot and seasoning for the beef
  • Mung Bean Sprouts were $1.49 and we used half or 25c per serve
  • Add 15c for carrot and other salad ingredients.

A tasty meal for $2.81 per serve. The freshness of the bean sprouts was a perfect balance for the beef.

Jun 24: Cheddar & Kumato, Turkey & Swiss; Chowder with Asian Flavors

Lunch

We’re really enjoying the Kumato and Cheddar sandwiches, so we shared another today, and paired it with a Turkey and Swiss.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • The turkey is $3.49 and we shared ⅓ or 58c per serve
  • The Old Crock cheddar was $5.45 or 68c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we shared one, or 35c per serve
  • Swiss slices are 12 for $3.99 or 34c per serve
  • Add 20c for garlic spread.

Two good sandwiches for $2.81 per serve.

Dinner

We swapped our Meatless Monday to Sunday and had the Tostados so tonight we had a repeat of the Chowder with Asian Flavors, which was planned for last night!

The Chowder is $4.33 per serve.

Jun 23: Bahn Mi; Fried Egg on Tostadas with Avocado and Salsa

Lunch

For lunch we had a Bahn Mi from Pho Saigon 1 just down the road in Chatsworth for $9.27 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

Although we planned to return to the Chowder with Asian Flavors, we decided to flip tonight and Meatless Monday around and have Fried Egg on Tostados with Avocado and Salsa.

  • Pastured eggs are 51c each  or $1.02 per serve
  • The tostadas are 22 for $2.29 or 21c per serve
  • Avocados were $1.38 for two and we shared one, or 35c per serve
  • Add 40c for salsa
  • Add 5c for spring onion.

A satisfying and surprisingly filling meal for $2.03 per serve.

Jun 22: Kumato & Cheddar, Egg Salad Sandwiches; Lamb Vindaloo with Sugar Snap Peas

Lunch

We shared two decent sandwiches. A repeat of the Kumato and Cheddar and and Egg Salad with Sprouts.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we shared one, or 35c per serve
  • The Old Crock cheddar was $5.45 or 68c per serve
  • The egg salad is $3.69 for 10 oz and we used 2 oz per serve, or 92c per serve
  • Add 10c for sprouts
  • Add 20c for garlic spread.

Two good, meatless, sandwiches that we shared for $2.91 per serve.

Dinner

We decided to go easy and simply reheated two Trader Joe’s Lamb Vindaloo meals and served them with Sugar Snap Peas.

  • The Lamb Vindaloo was $4.49 per serve
  • Sugar Snap Peas were $3.49 and we each had ⅛ or 44c per serve.

The Lamb Vindaloo was much better than we expected. Good spicing and flavor with very tender meat. An easy meal for $4.93 per serve.

Jun 21: Kumato & Cheddar, Sweet & Spicy Tuna with Swiss; Chowder with Asian Flavors

Lunch

Some simple sandwiches for lunch.

  • The tuna pouch was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • Swiss slices are 12 for $3.99 or 34c per serve
  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we shared one, or 35c per serve
  • The Old Crock cheddar was $5.45 or 68c per serve
  • Add 20c for garlic spread.

A pair of good sandwiches for $3.23 per serve.

Dinner

This was a new recipe and new concept: Chowder with Asian Flavors. It sounded intriguing so we had to give it a try on “Fishy Friday.” We smoked the cod in our stovetop smoker before chopping and adding to the recipe just at the end. Similarly the shrimp were ‘steamed’ on top of the soup for five minutes.

We will get four serves from the soup, although we add shrimp fresh each time. We skipped the baby corn and coriander.

  • Argentinian Shrimp are $9.99 for a pack and we use about ¼ pack each, or $2.50
  • The cod fillets were six for $12.99 or $1.08 per serve
  • Russet Potatoes were 50c or 13c per serve
  • Limes were 79c or 20c per serve
  • Coconut milk was $1.29 or 32c per serve
  • Corn adds 25c per serve
  • Add 30c for the remaining ingredients.

An excellent soup for $4.33 per serve. The Argentinian Shrimp had great flavor and will be buying them again.

Jun 20: Eggs Benedict/Heuvos Rancheros; NY Strip Steak with Béarnaise Sauce and Farro Tabbouleh

Breakfast

Before leaving San Diego we had brunch with a friend. Foodie Philip had Classic Eggs Benedict with Hash Browns, while Foodie Greg had Heuvos Rancheros.

Aside from the Hash Browns being somewhat undercooked the rest of the meal was pretty good for $21.55 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

Thursday night is traditionally our “steak” night and tonight we grilled a NY Strip steak to perfection and accompanied it with Farro Tabbouleh.

  • The NY Strip Steak was $20.18 or $10.09 per serve
  • Béarnaise sauce was $3.29 and we used ¼ or 42c per serve
  • Persian Cucumbers were $2.29 for five, and we shared one in the tabbouleh, or 23c per serve
  • The farro was $1.79 for the pack, but we shared ⅓ or 10c per serve
  • Tomatoes were $3.49 for five but we shared one, or 35c per serve
  • Mint came from our garden.

A great steak and salad meal for $11.16 per serve.

  • The avocado cost 79c and we shared one or 40c per serve
  • The smoked trout is $3.49 per can and we shared one, or $1.75 per serve
  • Add 20c for garlic spread.

A decent sandwich for $3.01 per serve.
