Nov 29: Ham, Kumato & Swiss; Clam Chowder

Lunch

A cold day dictated a return to toasted sandwiches, so we sliced off some Ham, added sliced Kumato, and topped with Swiss Cheese and toasted until the cheese was melting.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • We shared half a serve of Ham or 28c per serve
  • Swiss slices are 12 for $3.99 or 34c per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread and Butter.

A great sandwich for $1.68 per serve.

Dinner

For dinner we defrosted our Clam Chowder and reheated it. Unfortunately the freezing and reheating caused the remaining potato to break down, which dominated the flavor.

The Clam Chowder is $2.98 per serve.

Nov 28: French Onion Soup; Baked Ham and Choucroute

Lunch

We defrosted and reheated some of the French Onion Soup for $3.63 per serve.

Dinner

As our Thanksgiving was postponed until Saturday, we baked a Ham and served it with the remaining Choucroute.

This time we abandoned Alton Brown’s two step recipe as we were not glazing the ham, and followed the instructions on the packet!

  • The Ham was $17.72 for 10 lbs, but assuming 2 lb is bone, that’s 16 generous eight ounce serves, or $1.11 per serve
  • The Choucroute is $2.20 per serve.

This was one of the most tender Baked Hams we’ve had, leading us to believe the two step cooking was lightly over cooking the ham. Another warming meal for $3.11 per serve.

Nov 27: Spanish Style Meatloaf in Panini Roll; Choucroute with Bavarian Bratwurst

Lunch

Since we had some of the Spanish Style Meatloaf left over beyond our expected four serves, we reheated it in the oven with the Panini Rolls.

  • The Panini Roll is 63c per serve
  • The Meatloaf has been accounted for in the four evening serves.

This meatloaf didn’t really work as a filling for the roll, but still okay for 63c per serve.

Dinner

As we plan on having Choucroute with our Baked Ham tomorrow, we prepared the Choucroute today and topped with Trader Joe’s Bavarian Bratwurst.

  • The Bratwurst were $3.99 or $2.00 per serve
  • Carrots were $1.99 or 50c per serve
  • Sauerkraut was $4.99 or $1.25 per serve
  • Rosé was $1.00 or 25c per serve
  • Add 20c per serve for other ingredients.

The Choucroute was excellent and a perfect complement to the Bratwurst. A great cold weather meal for $4.20 per serve.

Nov 26: Steak & Stout Pie; Spanish Style Meatloaf with Cuban Style Black Beans and Corn

Lunch

Being a cold day we heated two Trader Joe’s Steak & Stout Pies for $6.99 or $3.50 per serve.

Dinner

For dinner we revisited the Spanish Style Meatloaf by slicing off some generous serves, and frying them in butter. We paired with with Cuban Style Black Beans to which we added some Frozen Corn.

  • The Meatloaf is $4.07 per serve
  • A can of Cuban Style Black Beans is 99c or 50c per serve
  • Corn adds 25c per serve.

We still have some left over Meatloaf (although the whole has been counted in two meals), but we definitely enjoyed this revisit, for $4.82 per serve.

Nov 25: Cheddar & Kumato, Hummus & Sprouts; Eggs in Purgatory

Lunch

Today we returned to the very successful Hummus & Sprouts paired with a Cheddar and Kumato sandwich.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • The Sprouts are $2.99 and we use ¼ per sandwich, or 38c per serve
  • The Hummus was $3.99 and we used ¼ or 50c per serve
  • The Old Croc is $4.99 and we used half, or $1.25 per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we shared one, or 35c per serve.

Both sandwiches were tasty for $3.14 per serve.

Dinner

A long time ago we used to make Eggs in Purgatory regularly, but ultimately couldn’t find a really good Tomato Sauce. After discovering the Rao’s Marinara we decided to try their Arrabbiata Sauce, which has a bit of spicy heat to it.

As it turns out, we preferred the Marinara Sauce, which seemed to have more depth of flavor, whereas the Arrabbiata Sauce relied on the heat without the complex tomato flavors of the Marinara.

  • At $8.99 or $4.50 per serve, the sauce is not cheap, but it is good
  • Pastured Eggs are 51c and we averaged one and a half, or 77c per serve.

An enjoyable meal, and one we’ll definitely repeat with the Marinara Sauce, for $5.27 per serve.

Nov 24: Bacon, Scrambled Eggs & Blistered Tomatoes on Toast; Spanish Style Meatloaf with Black Beans

Lunch

For Lunch we fried off some Bacon and blistered some Cherry Tomatoes. We then scrambled eggs and stacked it all on Toast.

  • The Dave’s Killer Bread is 33c per serve
  • Two eggs each are $1.02 per serve
  • A Rasher or Bacon is 67c per serve
  • The cherry tomatoes were $2.99 and we used 1/3 or 50c per serve.

A good Sunday lunch for $2.52 per serve.

Dinner

We returned to the Spanish-Style Meatloaf with a mix of ground pork and ground Turkey. Although we skipped the cheese, we will get four serves from this meatloaf.

  • The pork came from our Keller Crafted meat delivery – 1 lb of ground pork cost $8.31 or $2.08 per serve
  • The Ground Turkey was $2.99 or 50c per serve
  • The potato was 75c or 19c per serve
  • The orange bell pepper was $1.99 or 50c per serve
  • Instead of white bread we used Panko breadcrumbs at $2.99 for 16oz and we used 8oz or 37c per serve
  • An pastured egg is 51c or 13c per serve
  • Add 30c per serve for paprika, onion, garlic, thyme and seasoning
  • The Black Beans are 50c per serve.

The combination of smoked paprika and pork made this very reminiscent of dry chorizo, except with a much lighter texture and it paired well with the Black Beans for $4.57 per serve.

Nov 23: Tuna & Avocado, Hummus & Sprouts; Sausage and Bean Casserole

Lunch

Today’s sandwiches returned to the Hummus and Sprouts we enjoyed last week, and paired it with a Smoked Tuna & Avocado. Unfortunately the Avocado was over-ripe so we didn’t harvest a lot of flesh.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 66c per serve
  • The Sprouts are $2.99 and we use ¼ per sandwich, or 38c per serve
  • The Hummus was $3.99 and we used ¼ or 50c per serve
  • The Tuna Pouch is 99c or 50c per serve
  • The Avocado was two for $1.98 or 45c per serve.

Two good sandwiches for $2.49 per serve.

Dinner

For dinner we repeated the Sausage and Bean Casserole for $5.08 per serve.

Nov 22: Gyro; Clam Chowder

Lunch

The Foodies were close to the New York Chicken and Gyro so we picked up Lamb Gyros for $8.17 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

Being Fishy Friday we decided on homemade Clam Chowder using Foodie Greg’s own recipe, which made six serves in total.

  • The Clams and Clam Juice were $11.49 or $1.92 per serve
  • Celery was 99c but we used half, or 8c per serve
  • Russet Potatoes were $1.83 or 31c per serve
  • Bacon was $7.99 for 12 rashers and we used two, or 22c per serve
  • Half and Half is $1.49 or 25c per serve
  • Add 20c per serve for other ingredients.

This made an excellent Clam Chowder, with abundant “clammage” and a smooth creamy texture. A great soup for $2.98 per serve.

Nov 21: Hummus & Sprouts, Cheddar & Kumato; Rump Steak with Farrow Tabbouleh

Lunch

Our sandwiches today were the very successful Hummus & Sprouts paired with a Cheddar and Kumato sandwich.

Dinner

For dinner we pan seared two small Top Sirloin steaks from our meat box, and paired with a Farrow Tabbouleh.

  • The top sirloin from the Keller Crafted delivery was $12.36 or $6.18 per serve
  • The farrow was $1.79 for the pack, but we shared ⅓ or 10c per serve
  • Béarnaise sauce was $3.29 and we used ¼ or 42c per serve
  • The cherry tomatoes were $2.99 and we used half or 75c per serve
  • Parsley was 33c or 16c per serve
  • Add 30c for seasoning.

The Steak was a little disappointing. While it had great flavor it was somewhat tougher than we have come to expect from Keller. Still an enjoyable meal for $7.91 per serve.

Nov 20: White Chili in Panini Roll; Pizza

Lunch

For lunch we finished cooking some Panini Rolls and finished the left over White Pork Chili.

  • The Panini Roll is 63c
  • The Chili is $5.72 a serve, but we shared a half, or $1.43 per serve.

It was a decent lunch for $2.06 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight was our regular User Group meeting that always finishes with pizza for $10 per person.
