Jan 15: Tarte Aux Champignons with a Garden Salad

Lunch

For lunch we cooked two of our remaining Sausage Rolls for $4.88 per serve with a slide salad.

Dinner

At the last minute we were forced to change plans, so we reheated a Tarte Aux Champignons from Trader Joe’s and served with a Garden Salad.

  • The Tarte Aux Champignons was $4.49 or $2.25 per serve
  • Add 80c for Garden Salad.

The Tarte was quite tasty and contributed to a decent meal for $3.05 per serve.

Jan 14: Macadamia Nut Crusted Flounder with Japanese Coleslaw

Lunch

We were in Simi Valley so we picked up Scallops, Fries and Coleslaw from Mr Fish and Chips. After a small price increase it was $7.64 per serve with tax and tip, which is still very good value.

Dinner

Foodie Greg found some Macadamia Nut Crusted Flounder at Aldi so we decided to give it a try. We served with a Japanese inspired Coleslaw.

  • The Flounder was $6.99 or $3.50 per serve
  • The Coleslaw Mix adds 45c per serve
  • Add 40c for Dressing Ingredients.

The Flounder was okay, without being outstanding. A decent meal for $4.35 per serve.

Jan 13: Lamb Chops Braised in Kashmiri Sauce with Brown Rice and Peas and a Tomato Salad with Mint Dressing

Lunch

We had a simple Cheese Salad Sandwich for lunch.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • Sliced Gouda is 34c per serve
  • Add 50c for Salad ingredients.

Toasting the bread before making the sandwich gives good textural variety. A decent sandwich for $1.58 per serve.

Dinner

While we cooked in a Kashmiri Sauce, when combined they make Lamb Rogan Josh. We served with Brown Rice and Peas and a Tomato Salad with Mint Dressing.

  • The generously portioned Lamb Shoulder Chops were $17.68 or $8.84 per serve
  • Brown Rice adds 34c per serve
  • Add 45c for frozen Green Peas
  • Cherry Tomatoes were $2.97 and we used half, or 75c per serve
  • Add 10c for Shallot
  • Add 30c for Yoghurt
  • Mint came from our garden.

An excellent meal. The Lamb was very tender and tasty and very close to perfect! A very good meal for $10.78 per serve.

Jan 12: The Country Deli Skirt Steak Dinner

Lunch

Since we had some Cuban Roast Pork left, we decided on a Pork Salad Sandwich.

  • The Cuban Roast Pork was $2.95 per serve, and we shared one, or $1.04 per serve
  • Dave’s Killer Bread adds 74c per serve
  • Beets add 20c per serve
  • Lettuce adds 20c per serve
  • Add 60c for Garlic Spread and Mayo.

A pretty good sandwich for $2.78 per serve.

Dinner

It has been a while, but we returned to The Country Deli for the Marinated Skirt Steak with Home Fries and Sautéed Vegetables, to which we added three Eggs for Foodie Philip.

  • The Marinated Skirt Steak Meal is $36.21 with tax and tip, or $18.11 per serve
  • Pastured Eggs are 38c each, or 57c per serve.

An excellent meal for $18.68 per serve.

Jan 11: Eggs in Purgatory

Lunch

We still had Quick Moussaka left over, despite already getting four serves, so we heated it and served on Toast.

  • The Moussaka has already been accounted for
  • A slice of Dave’s Killer Bread is 37c.

The Moussaka was very reminiscent of “Savory Mince on Toast” (Mince = Ground Beef) from the Foodies’ childhood, and a tasty lunch for 37c!

Dinner

Our Meatless Monday became a Meatless Tuesday with Eggs in Purgatory.

  • Two Pastured Eggs are 76c per serve
  • The Organic Marinara Sauce was $1.69 or 85c per serve
  • Italian Bread adds 28c per serve.

A decent meal for $1.89 per serve.

Jan 10: Cubano with Fries

Lunch

The weather was still cold (for Southern California) so we opted for the Aldi Potato Soup for $1.03 per serve.

Dinner

We took some of the remaining Cuban Roast Pork and made some pretty good Cubano sandwiches that we served with Oven Fries.

  • The Bagel is 58c per serve
  • The Cuban Roast Pork was $2.95 per serve, and we shared one, or $1.04 per serve
  • The Breakfast Ham is $2.99 for six, or 50c per serve
  • Add 30c for Pickles
  • Add 34c for a slice of Gouda Cheese
  • The Oven Fries were $1.49 and we shared half, or 38c per serve.

A very tasty meal for $3.14 per serve.

Jan 9: Cuban Style Roast Pork with Cuban Black Beans and Brown Rice

Lunch

The Foodies had a late breakfast of Protein enhance Pancakes.

  • Pancake mix is 75c per serve
  • A pat of Butter adds 25c
  • Nutella adds 52c per serve.

A tasty brunch for $1.52 per serve.

Dinner

Time for Cuban-Style Roast Pork with Mojo Sauce, tonight with a Black Bean Salad and Brown Rice. We will get four serves from the Pork.

  • The Pork Butt was around $8.62 after all discounts, or $2.16 per serve
  • Limes were 56c or 14c per serve
  • Grapefruit was $1.39 or 35c per serve
  • Navel Oranges were $1.19 or 30c per serve
  • Cuban Black Beans were $2.99 or $1.50 per serve
  • Add 34c for Brown Rice.

Tonight’s Pork was tender and juicy, and a cut above our regular Pork Butt. It was a very tasty meal for $4.79 per serve.

Jan 6: Sausage Rolls with Australian Inspired Salad

Lunch

For lunch we did a simple Ham Salad Sandwich, but with pre-toasted bread.

  • Breakfast Ham adds 50c per serve
  • Add 50c for Lettuce, Tomato and Beetroot.

A good sandwich for $1.74 per serve.

Dinner

It’s been a very long time since we have cooked, or even eaten, a Sausage Roll. The Sausage Roll is a quintessential Australian snack made from Ground Pork, Breadcrumbs and Spices wrapped in a Puff Pasty casing. We did try cooking Sausage Rolls a long time ago, but were disappointed in the results.

We made eight large Sausage Rolls, ate two each and froze the others

  • Bacon was $6.99, and we used about half, or 88c per serve
  • The Breakfast Sausage was $6.00, or $1.50 per serve
  • Puff Pastry was $4.99 ot $1.25 per serve
  • Add 45c for Onion, Garlic, and other ingredients
  • Add 80 for Salad ingredients.

The Sausage Roll turned out very well, and were very satisfying. A very tasty, well rounded meal for $4.88 per serve.
