Feb 13: Ploughman’s Lunch; Soutzoukakia with Feta, Olive and Radicchio Salad

Lunch

Since we have had some of our neighbor’s Sourdough on hand, we lightly toasted two slices, topped with Branston Pickle and Cheddar, and served with Pickled Onion and Apple Slices.

  • The Sourdough was free
  • The Irish Cheddar was $3.49 and we used about 60%, or $1.05 per serve
  • Branston Pickle was $13.31 for the jar, and we used about 1/5th, or $1.33 per serve
  • Apple adds 20c per serve
  • Pickled Onion adds 10c per serve.

A very delightful and tasty meal for $2.68 per serve.

Dinner

A welcome return to Soutzoukakia, tonight served with a Feta, Olive and Radicchio Salad.

  • Australian Ground lamb was $5.99 at Aldi or $2.00 per serve
  • An egg is 51c or 17c per serve
  • 8 oz Panko breadcrumbs are $2.99 and we used half, or 25c per serve
  • Parmesan is $3.99 for 8oz and we shared 2 oz or 50c per serve
  • 1/4 cup and a tablespoon of red wine – halved – is 34c per serve
  • Parsley was $1.49 for the bunch, but we only used 1/4 or 13c per serve
  • Fresh mint came from our garden
  • The Radicchio was $3.49, but half makes four serves of the salad, or 44c per serve
  • The French (Valbreso) Feta was $10.99 but we used 1/6 or 92c per serve
  • The olives come in a $4.49 jar, and we used 1/3, or 75c per serve.

The Soutzoukakia was light and flavorsome as usual, and the salad an excellent accompaniment, for $5.50 per serve.

Feb 12: Baguette with Chuck Roast & Caramelized Onion; Barramundi and Caesar Salad

Lunch

We finished the remaining half of the par-baked Baguette and filled with half the remaining Chuck Roast and some Caramelized Onion we made this morning. We heated the Beef in an A Jus made from Bone Broth, Worcestershire Sauce and Horseradish.

  • A serve of Chuck Roast was $4.56 or $2.28 per serve
  • The Baguette was 38c per serve
  • Caramelized Onion adds 30c per serve
  • Bone Broth adds 50c per serve
  • Add 30c for Worcestershire Sauce and Horseradish.

An excellent sandwich and very tasty Jus for $3.76 per serve.

Dinner

We returned to a favorite Fishy Friday combo: Barramundi with Caesar Salad. We use our Cuisineart multipurpose cooker to cook from both sides of the fish at once, minimizing the risk of breaking it in handling.

  • The Barramundi was on special for $7.99 or $4.00 per serve
  • The Caesar Salad kit was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve.

A quick, but very tasty meal, for $5.00 per serve.

Feb 11: Fire Roasted Peppers, Hammon & Smokey Cheddar; Beef Massaman

Lunch

We had some Hammon (City Ham) in our Charcuterie, so we finished cooking half a Baguette, brushed it with Olive Oil, added Fire Roasted Peppers and Smokey Cheddar for a new flavor profile that riffs on the Chorizo & Fire Roasted Pepper combo of yesterday.

  • With all discounts taken into account the Hammon was 85c per serve
  • Smokey Cheddar is 34c per serve
  • The Baguette was 38c per serve
  • Add 30c for Olive Oil.

This turned out really well for $1.83 per serve. The balance between the ingredients was very good and the combination was better than the sum of the ingredients.

Dinner

We had a Grass Fed Chuck Roast so we cut it up into some larger chunks, for later use, and smaller pieces for tonights meal.

  • The Chuck Roast was $18.22 or $4.56 per serve
  • The curry is $3.38 per can or $1.69 per serve
  • Coconut milk is $1.69 per can or 85c per serve
  • Peanuts were $2.99 but we only used half, or 75c per serve
  • Carrots add 37c per serve
  • Peal onion adds 20c per serve
  • The Medley of Baby Potatoes was $2.69 and we used ⅓, or 45c per serve.

We noticed no difference between the Keller Crafted and the Aldi Simply Nature grass fed Beef. We had a delicious, flavorsome curry for $8.87 per serve.

Feb 10: Chorizo, Roasted Peppers & Smokey Cheddar Toasted; Beer Bratwurst with Radicchio Apple Salad

Lunch

We repeated the Chorizo, Bell Pepper & Smokey Cheddar toasted sandwich for $3.77 per serve.

Dinner

It was time to return to the Aldi Beer Bratwurst, so we served with a salad made by augmenting the remains of last night’s salad with more Apple and Radicchio.

  • Beer Bratwurst were $4.49 or $2.25 per serve
  • The Radicchio was $3.49, but half makes four serves of the salad, or 44c per serve
  • The Apple adds 20c per serve
  • Add 30c for Dressing ingredients and Mustard.

As always a pretty decent meal for $3.19 per serve.

Feb 9: Shin Ramen; Smoked Short Ribs with Apple Radicchio Salad and Baked Beans

Lunch

A cold start to the day made hot noodles an attractive proposition. A pack of four Shin Noodle Bowl was $3.69 or 93c per serve ($1.23 with vegetable), which proved to be quite generous and a satisfying – if spicy hot – meal. We do, however, only use one of the two flavor pouches.

Dinner

We were able to procure some Short Ribs on special from Whole Foods, so we smoked them on our stovetop smoker, before cooking for an extra 90 minutes. We served with an Apple Radicchio Salad and the remaining small serve of Baked Beans.

  • The Short Ribs were $8.57 after Prime discount, or $4.29 per serve
  • The Radicchio was $3.49, but half makes four serves of the salad, or 44c per serve
  • The Apple adds 20c per serve
  • Add 40c per serve for Rub, and Dressing ingredients.

The Short Ribs came out perfectly, with a good smoke flavor and fall off the bone tender. A very good meal for $5.33 per serve.

Feb 8: Apple & Delice de Bourgogne/Neufchâtel; 13 Bean Soup

Lunch

We ran out of the Delice de Bourgogne so we added Neufchatel to the other sandwich.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • The Delice de Bourgogne was $5.38 and we shared 1/6 , or 25 per serve
  • Apple adds 10c per serve
  • Neufchatel adds 10c per serve.

The Neufchatel is nice, but it isn’t Delice de Bourgogne! Still two good shared sandwiches for $1.29 per serve.

Dinner

For tonight’s Meatless Monday we returned to the 13 Bean Soup from last week for 94c per serve, plus half a Brioche Bagel for 29c, or $1.23 per serve.

Feb 7: Heuvos Rancheros; Sous Vide Shrimp on Japanese Fried Rice

Lunch

For lunch we purchased Heuvos Rancheros from La Fiesta for $10.54 per serve, with tax and tip.

Dinner

Tonight we sous video some Argentinean Shrimp and placed it atop some Japanese Fried Rice.

  • Japanese Style Fried rice comes from Trader Joe’s and is $3.29 or $1.65 per very generous serve
  • 1 lb of shrimp is $10.99 and we used half,  or $2.75 per serve.

A tasty and satisfying meal with almost no effort, for $4.40 per serve.

Feb 6: Lamb Gyro; Sous Vide and Seared Duck Breast with Pad Thai Noodles and Stir-fried Bok Choy

Lunch

We drove down to New York Chicken and Gyro for one of our favorite lunches: the Lamb Gyro for $8.17 per serve with tax and tip.

Dinner

While we were returning to our Asian inspired Duck, this time we were testing Duck Breasts from Aldi, instead of our regular supply from Whole Foods. The Aldi Duck is a 16oz pack vs around 12oz from Whole Foods, but at around half the price per ounce.

  • The Duck was $10.00 for two 8oz Breasts, or $5.00 per serve
  • The Bok Choy was $2.48, and we used 1/5th, or 25c per serve
  • Pad Thai Noodles add 45c per serve
  • The Duck Fat to cook the noodles comes free
  • Add 30c per serve for other ingredients.

The Aldi Duck was every bit as tender as the Whole Foods version, but had more flavor in the Foodies’ opinion. Excellent value and a pity that it’s not a regular buy (or that we didn’t buy more when they were available). A great meal for our 30th Anniversary, costing just $6.00 per serve.

Feb 5: BBQ Chicken Breast, Garlic Spread & Tomato on Fresh Baguette; Smoked Trout Chowder

Lunch

A trip to Jon’s market always gives us a fresh Baguette and a very good BBQ Chicken, which makes one of our favorite lunch sandwiches.

  • The Chicken was $7.99 or $1.00 per serve
  • The Tomato adds 20c per serve
  • The Baguette was $3.49  or 87c per serve
  • Add 60c for Garlic Spread.

The Garlic Spread brings this together into a really tasty sandwich for $2.67 per serve.

Dinner

We finished the Smoked Trout Chowder from last week, for $3.42 per serve.

Feb 4: Smoked Salmon Garlic Naan “Pizza”; Tataki and Bento Box

Lunch

We took the remaining Garlic Naan, preheated it then topped with Neufchatel, Capers & Shallot before finishing it in the oven, then topping with Smoked Salmon.

  • The Garlic Naan is $1.00 per serve
  • The Smoked Salmon was $7.49 or $3.75 per serve
  • Add 30c for Shallot & Capers.

The Naan was much easier than working with Pizza dough on the grill, but it doesn’t come close to matching texture & flavor. This was still very tasty and enjoyable for $5.05 per serve.

Dinner

It was time to ‘hack’ the Bento Box from our local Japanese Restaurant by searing, and serving, some Ahi Tuna (Tataki) with it.

  • 12 oz Tuna was $5.19, or $2.60 per serve
  • The Bento Box was $17.84 with tax and tip.

A flavorsome, filling and indulgent meal for $20.44 per serve.
