We made a rare trip to Home Depot, added New York Chicken and Gyro to the trip and pickup up a Lamb Gyros for $8.17 with tax and tip.

Dinner

We took half the remaining Cuban Pork from last night, added Deli Ham, Swiss Cheese, etc and made a Cubano sandwich.

  • The Pork is $1.57 per serve
  • Deli Ham is 33c per serve
  • Swiss is 41c per serve
  • Bread and Butter Pickles are $4.69 for the jar, but we used less than 10%, or 23c per serve
  • The Brioche Bagel is 58c per serve
  • Add 60c for Mustard and Mayonnaise
  • Add 35c for Coleslaw.

A very tasty sandwich for $4.05 per serve.

Jul 17: Cuban Style Roast Pork with Cuban Black Beans and Sweet Potato Chips

Lunch

For lunch we picked up a Nashville Hot Chicken from Skewers’ for $8.75 per serve, with a shared Fries.

Dinner

Foodie Greg found a Pork Butt on special at Whole Foods, so we cooked Cuban-Style Roast Pork with Mojo Sauce and served with Cuban Style Black Beans, and Sweet Potato Oven Chips.

  • The Pork Butt was around $9.88 after all discounts, or $2.47 per serve
  • Limes were 57c or 15c per serve
  • Grapefruit was $1.29 or 32c per serve
  • An Orange was 79c or 20c per serve
  • Black Beans were $1.99 and or $1.00 per serve
  • Add 50c for Sweet Potato Chips.

We somewhat overcooked the Sweet Potato Oven Chips, but the few that weren’t burnt were very tasty. An excellent meal for $4.64 per serve.

Jul 16: Barramundi with Caesar Salad

Lunch

For lunch we each had a Taco using the Nacho Beef & Bean Mix from the other night.

  • The Tortillas were $1.99 and we used 1/4, or 25c per serve
  • The Nacho Mix was $1.22 per half serve
  • Greek Yoghurt substituted for Sour Cream for 10c per serve
  • Add 10c for Roasted Pepper Salsa.

A nice variation at lunch for $1.67 per serve.

Dinner

A Fishy Friday return to Barramundi with Caesar Salad.

  • The Barramundi was on special for $7.99 or $4.00 per serve
  • The Caesar Salad kit was $1.99 or $1.00 per serve.

An easy and tasty meal for $5.00 per serve. The preserved Meyer Lemon slices were a hit of citrus and salt that perfectly complemented the Barramundi.

Jul 15: Hot and Sour Beef Salad

Lunch

Lunch today was Buttered Shin Ramen Noodles with (dry) Coleslaw.

  • A pack of four Shin Noodle Bowl was $3.69 or 93c per serve
  • Add 45c for Coleslaw mix
  • Butter adds 60c per serve.

We discarded the Spicy Broth after cooking the noodles, which leaves enough of the heat to be interesting. The Coleslaw mix works well. A nice change for $1.98 per serve,

Dinner

Tonight we returned to the Cambodian Hot and Sour Beef Salad

  • The NY Strip was $15.88 for two steaks, or $3.97 per serve
  • Limes were 49c for two but we shared one, or 13c per serve
  • Mint was from our garden
  • Lettuce adds 40c per serve
  • Spring Onions we grow
  • The Bell Pepper was 64c or 32c per serve
  • Instead of a Chili we used some Sweet Chili Sauce, which adds 20c per serve
  • Add 30c for Fish Sauce and other ingredients.

A favorite for $5.23 per serve.

Jul 14: Mango, Avocado and Shrimp Salad

Lunch

We repeated the Rissole Panini Roll with the last of the Rissoles, but with a sauce made of no added sugar Ketchup and Carolina Style BBQ Sauce for a flavor reminiscent of an Australian BBQ sauce, which is less sweet and more Tomato forward.

  • The Rissole is $1.12 per half serve
  • Butter Lettuce adds 25c per serve
  • The Smokey Cheddar is 34c per serve
  • The mixed sauce was probably 20c per serve
  • The Panini is 63c.

The custom sauce really made the flavor pop and take us both back to our Australian roots. A good sandwich for $2.54 per serve.

Dinner

Serving a Mango, Avocado and Shrimp Salad is a sure sign Summer is here. We sous vide the Shrimp before chopping and adding to the Salad.

  • 1 lb of shrimp is $10.99,  or and we used half $2.75 per serve.
  • Mango was 40c per serve
  • Avocado was 25c per serve
  • Add 35c for Lettuce
  • Add 20c for dressing ingredients.

A very tasty meal for $3.95 per serve.

Jul 13: Halloumi, Guacamole, Bell Peppers & Butter Lettuce Tacos

The Foodies skipped lunch today as they were apart, but we snacked for about $1.20 per serve.

Tonight’s “Meatless Monday” replacement was with Halloumi, Guacamole, Bell Peppers & Butter Lettuce Tacos.

  • The Halloumi was $5.99 or $3.00 per serve
  • The Tortillas were $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve
  • Guacamole is $1.10 per serve
  • Bell Peppers are 32c per serve
  • Tostados were $1.39 for 21, or 10c per serve
  • Greek Yoghurt substituted for Sour Cream for 10c per serve

A tasty meatless meal for $5.72 per serve.

Jul 12: Clean Out the Refrigerator, on Toast

For lunch we reheated two of our remaining rissoles, along with a par baked Panini Roll. Add Cheese, Lettuce and some BBQ sauce and you have a sandwich!

We had planned a “clean out the refrigerator” Frittata, for our Meatless Monday, so we postponed that augmented our Beef Ragu from the freezer, with Mixed Mushrooms and Bok Choy.

  • The Ragu is $3.46 per serve
  • The Mushroom Medley was $3.79 or 48c per serve
  • Add 50c for Bok Choy
  • The Italian Bread loaf is $2.19 and we used about ⅓, or 37c per serve.

The Ragu, Mushroom and Bok Choy was a good topping for the Italian Bread toast for $4.81 per serve.

Jul 11: Nachos

Lunch

For lunch we picked up Enchiladas from Viva La Fiesta nearby. Foodie Greg had the Chicken while Foodie Philip had the Green Pork Enchilada. They were both excellent. The Chicken actually tasted like Chicken, and the White Sauce was very flavorsome. The Pork was very tender and the Green Chili Sauce had just the right amount of heat. An excellent meal for $15.28 each with tax and tip.

Dinner

We tried a new Nachos recipe: The Best Nachos. The recipe will make at least four serves, probably more.

  • The Ground Beef is $5.99 or $1.50 per serve
  • Refried Beans are 99c or 50c per serve
  • The Corn Chips were $1.99 and we used about ⅓, or 33c per serve
  • Baby Bell Peppers add 32c per serve
  • Add 10c for Plain Yoghurt
  • Add 40c for Guacamole.

These were a lot more tasty than expected. A very filling meal for $3.05 per serve.

Jul 10: Rack of Lamb with Citrus and Feta Salad

Lunch

We still had Chorizo from the Corn, so we repeated our Chorizo, Bell Pepper and Smokey Cheddar Toasted Sandwiches.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • Smokey Cheddar is 34c per serve
  • The Chorizo was $4.72 and we half, or $1.18 per serve
  • Add 50c for Garlic Spread
  • Fire Roasted Peppers cost $1.99 and we used half, or 50c per serve.

A very tasty sandwich for $3.26 per serve.

Dinner

Time to sous vide half a Rack of Lamb and served them with a Ruby Grapefruit and Feta Citrus Salad.

  • The Rack of Lamb was $14.27, but we split that into two meals, or $3.57 per serve
  • The Grapefruit was $3.24 or $1.62 per serve
  • The Feta was $6.49 and we shared ¼, or 81c per serve
  • Add 30c for Shallot and other ingredients.

The Rack of Lamb was seared extensively to render the fat after the sous vide cook, which improved the mouth feel. The sharpness of the Citrus and Feta Salad is a good complement to the fatty Lamb. A very good meal for $6.30 per serve.

Jul 9: Rissoles with Australian Style Salad

Lunch

Skewers’ Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich each for $8.75 per serve, with a shared Fries.

Dinner

We tried a new Rissole recipe that incorporates more vegetables in the mix, and served with a Pickled Beet, Caramelized Onion and Semi-dried Tomatoes on a bed of Greens, reminiscent of the salad on an Australian Hamburger. We got four serves because of the extra bulk.

  • Dry aged ground beef $5.99 or $1.50 per serve
  • 8 oz Panko breadcrumbs are $2.99 and we used half, or 38c per serve
  • A Pastured Egg is 42c or 11c per serve
  • The onion is 4c per serve
  • Zuccini adds 20c per serve
  • Spinach was $1.49 or 19c per serve
  • Pickled beets in vinaigrette are $1.69, of which we used about ⅓ or 28c per serve
  • We used about ½ of the $5.75 Caramelized Onion Cheddar, or $1.44 per serve
  • Add 10c for Carolina BBQ sauce.

These had a very light texture and came out rather well for $4.24 per serve.
