Aug 10: Brioche Bagel with Cream Cheese & Sweet Chili Sauce, Avocado; Miso Mushroom Soba Soup

We decided to treat the Bagel as a Bagel and smear stuff on top! Half we covered with Neufchatel and Sweet Chili Sauce, the other half we covered with Avocado liberally sprinkled with Balsamic Vinegar and a generous grind of Black Pepper.

  • The Brioche Bagels are $2.89 for five, or 58c per serve
  • Neufchatel adds 15c per serve
  • Add 30c for Sweet Chili Sauce
  • An Avocado is 49c or 25c per serve
  • Add 25c for Balsamic Vinegar & Black Pepper.

The Neufchatel and Sweet Chili Sauce was our favorite, but both were good for $1.53 per serve.

Dinner

Take some intensely flavored Miso Mushrooms and add them to a flavorsome broth and you have a very good Meatless Monday.

  • The Noodles were $1.69 or 85c per serve
  • Mushrooms were $2.49 or $1.25 per serve
  • Chicken Broth adds 50c per serve
  • Pastured Eggs are 51c each
  • Shelled edamame was $1.29 or 33c per serve.
  • Add 50c for Miso and other ingredients.

While the Mushrooms by themselves were a little intense, they balanced perfectly in the broth. A good Meatless Monday for $4.03 per serve.

Aug 9: Ham, Apple Sauerkraut Salad & Swiss on a Brioche Bagel; Pork Shoulder and Mushroom Stew in Red Wine, with Brown Rice and Peas

The Apple Sauerkraut & Ham on a Brioche Bagel was so good we decided to do it again.

  • The Brioche Bagels are $2.89 for five, or 58c per serve
  • Swiss adds 34c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 55c per serve
  • A serve of the Apple Sauerkraut Salad is 80c or 40c per serve.
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread.

This was still really good for $2.27 per serve.

Dinner

A recipe we’d like before – Greek Drunken Pork Stew – definitely feels like a cultural mashup when served with Rice and Beans!

  • The pork was $8.99 or $3.00 per serve
  • Red wine adds 50c or 17c per serve
  • Diced Tomatoes are 49c, or 16c per serve
  • Sliced Crimini Mushrooms were $2.49, or 83c per serve
  • Add 40c for the other ingredients
  • Brown rice adds 33c per serve
  • The English Peas were $3.49 and we served half, or 88c per serve.

The stew was excellent and the Rice and Peas made a good accompaniment for $5.77 per serve.

Aug 8: Avocado & Smoke Trout; Traditional Mexican Tostadas

Lunch

We shared an Avocado, a can of Smoked Trout and some Alfalfa sprouts, on two identical sandwiches.

  • Dave’s Killer Bread is 74c per serve
  • We shared a $3.49 can of Smoked Trout, or $1.75 per serve
  • The Avocado was 49c or 25c per serve
  • Add 20c for Spinach
  • Garlic Spread adds 40c per serve.

The key to this sandwich is the Garlic Spread and Sprouts, otherwise it would be a little boring, for $3.34 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we tried a recipe for Traditional Mexican Tostadas.

  • Tostados were $1.39 for 21, or 13c per serve
  • Dry aged 85/15 ground beef is $8.57 or $2.15 per serve
  • Seasoning adds 20c per serve
  • Guacamole is $1.10 per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we used one, or 35c per serve
  • Refried Beans are 49c per can at Aldi, and we used half a can, or 13c per serve
  • Tomato and Chilli canned was 49c or 13c per serve
  • Add 30c for Salsa..

These turned out to be very tasty, although a little tricky to eat, for $4.19 per serve.

Aug 7: Ham, Apple Sauerkraut Salad & Swiss on a Brioche Bagel; Seared Ahi Tuna on Udon Noodles

The Apple Sauerkraut Salad was so good we decided to add Ham and Swiss and serve on a Brioche Bagel.

Fishy Friday rolls around again and tonight we took our Seared Ahi Tuna and placed it on top of a Udon Noodle Salad.

  • 12 oz Tuna was $5.19, or $2.60 per serve
  • The Udon Noodles were from Aldi, and cost $1.69 or 85c per serve
  • Avocados are 49c at Aldi and we shared one for 25c per serve
  • Cucumber adds 20c per serve
  • Add 20c for Nori.

As always the Tuna was excellent and the deconstructed noodle bowl was successful for $4.10 per serve.

Aug 6: Ham, Swiss & Semi Dried Tomato, Tuna & Swiss; Beer Bratwurst and Apple Sauerkraut Salad

Todays shared sandwiches were a Ham, Swiss and Semi-dried Tomato on one, and Tuna & Swiss on the other.

A return to our Aldi Beer Bratwurst, but tonight we experimented with an Apple Sauerkraut Salad as the accompaniment. We got four full serves from the Salad.

  • Beer Bratwurst were $4.49 or $2.25 per serve
  • The Apple was 79c or 10c per serve
  • The Artisanal Kraut was $3.29 or 42c per serve
  • Add 30c for Dressing ingredients.

The Apple and Sauerkraut Salad was really good and we will repeat it. Overall a good meal for $3.07 per serve.

Aug 5: Lamb Rissoles in a Panini Roll; Grazing Dinner

Lunch

For lunch we warmed a serve of Lamb Rissoles and a Panini Roll. The Rissole went in the Roll, with Garlic Spread, Spinach & Semi-dried Tomatoes.

  • The Panini Roll is 63c
  • We split a $2.49 serve of Lamb Rissoles, or $1.24 per serve
  • Add 20c for Baby Spinach
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread
  • Add 30c for the Semi-dried Tomatoes.

An excellent lunch for $2.77 per serve.

Dinner

We had planned a grazing dinner on Saturday night, but with a change of plans, we enjoyed it tonight.

  • Endive was $2.99, but we shared about ⅓, or 50c per serve
  • Chicken and Black Truffle Pate was $5.49 and we had ⅔ or 92c per serve
  • The Caramelized Onion Dip was $2.99 and had about 80%, or $1.20 per serve
  • Marcona Almonds were $5.99 and we had ⅓ or $1.00 per serve
  • Blue Cambozola was $5.75 or $2.88 per serve
  • Olives add about 90c per serve
  • Smokey Cheddar adds $1.00 per serve
  • Bell Peppers add 48c per serve
  • Neufchatel adds 20c per serve
  • Champagne Grapes add 20c per serve
  • Dave’s Killer Bread adds 74c per serve.

We paired it with a rather good domestic sparkling White Wine from Aldi (for just $5.00) and over indulged, but enjoyed it a lot, for $10.02 per serve.

Aug 4: Bahn Mi; Fried Halloumi and Mango Salsa Tacos

Lunch

Today we picked up a Bahn Mi from Pho Saigon 1, for $10.00 with tax and tip.

Dinner

Tonight became our meatless meal, with pan seared Halloumi and a Mango Salsa in a Taco with some Baby Spinach.

  • Low Carb Tortilla’s were $3.69 for eight, and each had two, or 93c per serve
  • The Halloumi was $3.49 or $1.75 per serve
  • The Mango was 45c, or 23c per serve
  • Add 30c for Shallot and Greens.

Flavor came mostly from the excellent Mango Salsa, with the Halloumi providing a firmer “eat” not unlike meat. A very good meal for $3.21 per serve.

Aug 3: BLT on Homemade Sourdough; Shredded Beef Tostadas with Bell Peppers and Guacamole

Lunch

Once again my good neighbor activities paid and we scored more of the homemade Sourdough we enjoyed a little while back, this time with a hint of Rosemary. We decided to make a BLT again.

  • The bread came free
  • Mixed Greens add 30c per serve
  • Five Kumato were $3.49 and we used two, or 70c per serve
  • Bacon was $4.99 and we used four of 10 slices, or 50c per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread.

This bread is really good and makes a great sandwich for $1.90 per serve.

Dinner

Although today should be our Meatless Monday, we decided to finish the Shredded Beef on Tostadas.

  • The beef was $3.46 per serve
  • Tostados were $1.39 for 21, or 13c per serve
  • Guacamole is $1.10 per serve
  • Bell Peppers are 32c per serve
  • Add 30c for the dusting of Cotija.

These were very tasty and the Bell Peppers and Guacamole complemented the Beef well for $5.31 per serve.

Aug 2: Bacon, Black Bean & Egg Tacos; Jambalaya

Lunch

Because we try and do something different for Sunday lunch, we fried some Bacon, scrambled some Eggs, added Black Beans and served on a Taco.

  • Low Carb Tortilla’s were $3.69 for eight, and each had two, or 93c per serve
  • Bacon was $4.99 and we used two of 10 slices, or 25c per serve
  • An Egg per serve is 51c
  • Black Beans are 49c a can (Aldi) or 25c per serve
  • Add 20c for Salsa.

We would probably cut back on the Beans a little if we do this again, but overall it was tasty for $2.14 per serve.

Dinner

Tonight we repeated the Chorizo Jambalaya with Shrimp for $4.37 per serve.

For a change from sandwiches, we piled Sauerkraut, sliced Ham and Swiss Cheese on a Brioche Bagel.

  • Swiss adds 34c per serve
  • Black Forest Ham is $3.29 per pack, or 55c per serve
  • The Artisanal Kraut is $3.29 per packet and we used about ⅛, or 21c per serve
  • Add 40c for Garlic Spread.

A filling Bagel for $2.08 per serve.

Dinner

We decided on an experiment the Soutzoukakia recipe, but form and cook them as if they were Australian Rissoles. Normally cooked in the pressure cooker, the Soutzoukakia is soft and has a mousse like texture. We expected that to firm up with the griddle cook.

  • Ground lamb was $5.99 or $2.00 per serve on special at Aldi
  • An egg is 51c or 17c per serve
  • 8 oz Panko breadcrumbs are $2.99 and we used half, or 25c per serve
  • Cotija cheese, substituting for Parmesan is $3.99 for 8oz and we shared 2 oz or 50c per serve
  • 1/4 cup and a tablespoon of red wine – halved – is 34c per serve
  • Canned crushed tomatoes were $1.25 for the can, or 42c per serve
  • Onions, shallot and garlic adds 25c per serve
  • Parsley was $1.49 for the bunch, but we only used 1/4 or 13c per serve
  • Fresh mint came from our garden
  • The French (Valbreso) Feta was $10.99 but we used 1/6 or 92c per serve
  • Pomegranate Seeds were $4.49 and we used about half, or $1.13 per serve
  • Baby Bell Peppers add 32c per serve
  • Spinach adds 33c per serve
  • Add 30c for Dressing ingredients.

We were very surprised to find the Lamb Rissoles had the same texture as they do when cooked in the pressure cooker! They had the same mousse like texture. An excellent meal for $7.06 per serve.
